During class on January 20 and 25, 2011, we discussed the reasons why we study sport, and this is also discussed in Coakley’s text on pages 18 and 24. This article is a perfect example why so many people are interested in the study of sport.  With over 111 million people watching the Super Bowl in 2011, this shows how many people are interested in sport, and how sport is deeply involved in society.  The Super Bowl becomes a major social event every year; four of the top five most watched television events in history are Super Bowls.  As it states in the text on page 18, sports are everywhere we look and make up daily conversation.  The main reason millions of none sports fans watch the Super Bowl every year is to be able to have a conversation the next day about the event.

These conversations start relationships and broaden social networks as people identify with the same teams and athletes.  The media has been a major player in making sports what they are today.  As Coakley’s text states on page 24, the media has converted sports into a major player in the entertainment industry.  When companies are paying between two and four million dollars for thirty second advertisements during the Super Bowl and billions of dollars a year to broadcast events, this shows the strong connection between sports and the media.  So with the billions of dollars invested in sport, media attention and the effect sports have on the way people socialize, people across the globe should study sport, not just sport managers.  Many people worldwide do not fully understand what sport really is.  By studying sport, they will learn that sports have become much more than just a game on the field; sport is now a billion dollar industry.
The M*A*S*H television series finally was the most watched tv program of all time until the 2010 Super Bowl between Indianapolis and New Orleans.  The 2011 Super Bowl passed last years game as the most watched even with 111 million viewers.
